Pemberton paints the scene from a slightly elevated view, the winding cobblestone street drawing the eye upward through layers of activity. At the lower right, The Bell Bakery dominates the composition — its red shopfront luminous with golden light, the window display packed with baguettes, round loaves, pastries, and rolls, a chalkboard outside advertising tea, coffee, and bread. Two older gentlemen sit at a table outside reading, a woman with a newspaper beside them, a tabby cat curled at their feet. Up the street, a green bookshop has its shelves turned outward toward the pavement, and a woman in a camel coat browses with a pram beside her. A mother in a cream dress and ochre coat walks hand in hand with a small child, autumn leaves swirling around their feet.

Further up the cobbled hill, a woman in a scarf carries a market basket past a flower and produce stall heavy with pumpkins, apples, and autumn blooms. Brick and stone cottages with warm glowing windows line both sides of the street, a church clock tower with a green spire rising behind them into a cloud-swirled grey sky. Starlings wheel above the rooftops. The entire image is saturated in the colours of autumn — burnt orange, deep red, amber, warm gold, and the soft grey of a November sky.
